How to wash a 100% Cashmere garment
Apparently, washing a 100% cashmere garment may raise some concerns and perplexities. We are often unsure about the perfect way to wash such a garment: could it shrink? Could it pill? Will it bounce back to its original shape?
These questions are many, as well as the amount of care we must take when washing a 100% cashmere garment, but don't worry, it can also be done at home, with the right care.
Both hand and machine washing are suitable for this type of garment, read on to find out more.
Hand washing
Soak the garment in a basin full of lukewarm water with a few drops of a mild wool-friendly detergent. Gently massage the soaked garment, avoiding rubbing or twisting. This should not take longer than 5 minutes.
Washing Machine
If you want to use the washing machine, it is a good idea to wash the 100% cashmere garment inside out or place it in a special laundry bag to prevent it from spoiling. Use a detergent for delicates and select the appropriate wash cycle for wools. Always ensure that the temperature does not exceed 30°C and avoid the final spin cycle.
For drying
Once the garment is washed, to dry it, lay it on a flat surface away from heat sources and the sun. It is not recommended to hang the garment when wet as it will stretch.
Ironing phase
Direct contact between the iron and the 100% Cashmere garment is not recommended. Rather, iron the garment inside out and set the iron to the lowest temperature, passing quickly over the surface of the garment. Cashmere is in fact a creaseable fibre which does not require colour or mechanical action to be ironed.
To further protect the garment during ironing, use a cotton or muslin cloth placed over the item before applying the iron. Focus on specific areas like the collar, cuffs, and hems, which tend to wrinkle more.
Storage
It is best to store a cashmere garment folded on a flat surface to prevent it from losing its shape. Additionally, it's a good practice to keep 100% cashmere items in a breathable cotton bag with a natural repellent to protect them from moths.
